For the past few weeks, FloridaRegionFJMC.org has been traveling across the Sunshine State, from Palm Beach County to Orlando to Amelia Island and beyond, visiting many FJMC affiliated Jewish Men’s Clubs and Brotherhoods and doing outreach to several newly “discovered” clubs as we lay the foundation for future growth.
Today we want to shine a spotlight on Congregation B’nai Torah Men’s Club of Ormond Beach (CBT), located just North of Daytona Beach in Volusia County, Florida, and Club President Mark Givarz.
The CBT Men’s Club is an active group of men who are committed to constantly creating religious, cultural and social activities and programs appealing to a wide array of interests, while promoting camaraderie, friendship, community service and study. Everyone is invited for fun times, learning and performing mitzvot.
Club President Mark Givarz was born and raised in Salisbury, MD. After graduating from the University of Maryland – Baltimore County (UMBC), Mark moved to Tampa, FL, where in 1984 he met and married Alyce. Mark & Alyce have three adult children and a wonderful new granddaughter.
In 2001, Mark relocated to St. Louis, MO, joined the Congregation B’nai Amoona Men’s Club, and became Club president in 2007 where he led many successful Club events, including annual events such as a Chanukah dinner & Scotch in the Sukkot. Congregation B’nai Amoona Men’s Club signature program was to lead a congregational effort to fund Jewish Summer Camp and Israel Visit scholarships to the children of the synagogue.
Mark’s leadership skills landed him a role on the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs Midwest Region Executive Board, where he led numerous committees, was chairman of the 2012 Midwest Region Retreat, and in 2017 became the FJMC Midwest Region President. The Midwest Region serves clubs in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin. Mark is still active in FJMC, serving as a Member-At-Large on the International Executive Board, as well as other roles in the organization.
Mark and Alyce recently retired and relocated to beautiful Palm Coast, FL, where they enjoy walking on the beach, traveling to see friends, family and new destinations and being active members of their new spiritual home, Congregation B’nai Torah of Ormond Beach.
Mark’s goal as CBT Men’s Club President is to revitalize the Men’s Club and expand membership. Working closely with Rabbi S. David Kane and other synagogue leaders, the Club successfully launched the FJMC Yom Hashoah Yellow Candle program, providing each family with a special Yom Hashoah Candle that was lit on Holocaust Memorial Day. The CBT Men’s Club is currently building a calendar of fun and engaging Men’s Club programs and activities for the upcoming year, including a Men’s Club Family Bowling event at Ormond Lanes.
The CBT Men’s Club is one of the dozens of active, dynamic and vibrant Jewish Men’s Clubs and Brotherhoods that comprise the Florida Region of the FJMC. We serve the needs of Jewish Men’s Clubs and Brotherhoods across the State of Florida from the Panhandle to Miami. If you are not yet affiliated with the Federation, then today is the day to join us.
