The story of Congregation Schaarei Zedek began on October 14, 1894, when 31 men and women met in the home of M. Henry Cohen to form the first synagogue in Tampa. Since those humble beginnings, Schaarei Zedek has grown into a thriving family of close to 4,000 adults and children spanning four generations.

Keeping Tampa Jewish Since 1894

The Brotherhood of Congregation Schaarai Zedek perform community service through various social, religious, cultural, recreational, and educational activities; they sponsor the Sunday Morning Bagels and Schmooze, special events, social functions, adult education and support special Religious School and youth programs. The Brotherhood coordinates ushering for Shabbat and High Holy Days services and produce educational programs for the general membership, and create opportunities for men to network, explore, and celebrate through study, worship and service in an atmosphere of fellowship and the male Jewish spirit.

The Brotherhood provides an ideal way for the men in our congregation to get to know each other and to get involved in Temple and community life through service, commitment, and friendship. Our objectives are to explore contemporary issues affecting Jewish men and to provide service to the Temple in the spirit of fun and enjoyment.

The Schaarai Zedek Brotherhood is gearing up for another fabulous year of programming with a Brotherhood Kick-Off Event, “A Night North of Havana,” on Thursday, September 29, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bayshore Regency Clubhouse (3435 Bayshore Blvd). They will have a guayabera and tropical shirt contest, along with Cuban food and cigars. Brotherhood members may attend at no cost and all other attendees are $18 (credited towards your Brotherhood membership if you sign up). Further details on the event will be provided after registration.

The Schaarai Zedek Brotherhood also invite you to join them for “Bourbon and Cigars” on Thursday, October 20, at the J.C. Newman Cigar Company in Ybor. There will be food and cigars available along with award-winning pairings of alcohol, with descriptions given by Robert Applebaum and David and Michael Rosenbach – and a tour of the cigar factory known as “El Reloj.” This is an event that you don’t want to miss.

Join the Brotherhood of Schaarai Zadek, meet interesting people and make new friends that will last a lifetime.
