Sarasota is a city south of Tampa on Florida’s Gulf Coast that was once the winter home of the Ringling Brothers Circus. Today, it hosts a number of cultural institutes, notably the Ringling Museum of Art, which showcases old masters and modern art. It’s also the gateway to miles of beaches with fine sand and shallow waters, such as Lido Beach and Siesta Key Beach. Sarasota is also the home of the Temple Emanu-El Brotherhood.
Temple Emanu-El is a vibrant, inclusive and welcoming Reform Jewish congregation that comes together for religious and spiritual fulfillment, lifelong learning, memorable moments and support for social justice, for Israel and for each other. Temple Emanu-El is an innovative and engaging community for learning, spiritual growth and the celebration of Jewish culture for all generations in a manner that brings compassion and joy; an inclusive congregation that values diversity, open-mindedness and egalitarianism.
The Temple Emanu-El’s Brotherhood is an active and integral part of the congregation that offers a wide variety of programs throughout the year; from Sunday breakfast events to music performances to bus trips to lectures, with topics including religion, sports, photography and social issues. Brotherhood programs are open to all temple members; the first year of Brotherhood membership is free to new male Temple members ages 18 and older.
The Brotherhood serves the Temple through ushering for High Holy Day services, building the Temple sukkah, providing and serving pizza at the Temple’s annual Mitzvah Day and hot dogs at the annual Purim Carnival, holding an annual major fundraiser, helping with facilities projects and gifts for B’nai Mitzvah candidates. Men of all ages are invited to become a part of this fun and community-minded group.
In the November 2022 issue of Temple Emanu-El’s monthly bulletin, “Temple Times“, Brotherhood President Ken Simon reported that on October 9 the Brotherhood assembled the Temple Sukkah; the turnout was impressive and the team completed the structure in record time. The Brotherhood also hosted hosted “BUCS at Benderson”, the first in a series of multigenerational Brotherhood Sunday afternoon events drawing both football fans and families for an afternoon of football, finger food and good fellowship. On October 11 the Brotherhood and Sisterhood hosted a festive Sukkot celebration, dinner and and a thought-provoking discussion lead by Rabbi Glickman. The Brotherhood’s second monthly poker night was October 18th; participants had a great time, especially the winners. Board games such as Backgammon, Trivial Pursuits, Chess were added, making this monthly evening a true game night. Israeli Dancing co-sponsored by the Brotherhood, Sisterhood and Israeli Committee on October 23rd was another well attended event.
Looking ahead, the Brotherhood and the Israel Committee are delighted to present a special breakfast program on Sunday November 9 featuring distinguished attorney Harold Halpern; an insightful local columnist and speaker on a broad range of Israel issues. Harold recently visited Israel and met with a host of judiciary and political figures; he will present his views on a range of “hot button” issues confronting Israel today. Saves the dates; Sunday morning December 4 for a Brotherhood Board meeting and December 15 for the Brotherhood Book Club.
