Yom HaShoah begins at sundown, Monday, April 17, 2023. Light a candle; preserve a memory.

A message from Florida Region FJMC Yellow Candle Chairman Jon Zimmer:

“As the son of a Holocaust survivor, Yom HaShoah has incredible significance to me, as it does to many Jews. With the number of Holocaust survivors diminishing, it’s more important than ever to tell their stories, remember the horrors of it, and learn. We know all too well that anti-Semitism is not going away and is still pervasive in our society. Sadly, it comes from all sides. White supremacy, militant Islam, anti-Israel sentiment in disguise as “merely” being anti-Zionist, violent attacks on religious Jews in Brooklyn, and more.

Yom HaShoah begins at sundown, Monday April 17, 2023 (27 Nisan 5783). On the night of Yom HaShoah, remember those that perished in the Shoah and light a Yom HaShoah Yellow candle to shine a light of memory, a light of education and a light that we will never forget. Place your Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle in your window for all to see and recite the following meditation, authored by Rabbi Jules Harlow:

As I light this Yellow Candle, I vow never to forget the lives of the Jewish men, women, and children who were martyred and are symbolized by this flame. They were tortured and brutalized by human beings who acted like beasts; their lives were taken in cruelty. May we be inspired to learn more about our six million brothers and sisters as individuals and as communities, to recall their memory throughout the year so that they will not suffer a double death. May we remember not only the terror of their deaths but also the splendor of their lives. May the memory of their lives inspire us to hallow our own lives and live meaningful Jewish lives so that we may help ensure that part of who they were shall always endure.

MAY THEIR MEMORY BE A BLESSING FOR ALL OF US.
“THOSE WHO DO NOT REMEMBER THE PAST ARE CONDEMNED TO RELIVE IT.”
