This article is Part Three of a Four Part series about the adventures of the TXOKO Culinary Club of the Brotherhood of Kol Ami – Tampa, Florida

In this four-part series, Florida Region FJMC invites you to take a seat at the table, expand your palate and try something new with the “TXOKO Culinary Club”, an original program from the Brotherhood of Kol Ami in Tampa, Florida.

The “TXOKO Culinary Club” is a hands-on, participatory group gastronomic experience with a focus on learning about, preparing and enjoying a delicious and authentic communal meal of home-made, ethnic “Jewish food” from different countries and cultures from around the world.

The third episode of the “TXOKO Culinary Club” focused on the Jewish Cuisine of the Balkans, including Bulgaria and the former Yugoslavia; a land full of war and strife, but also a land where Ashkenazi and Sephardic cultures blended into Slavic, Romani Gypsy, and Mediterranean cultures to create a flavorful cuisine.

Kol Ami Brotherhood President Jon Zimmer reports, “we cooked up a slightly spicy Red Pepper and Eggplant sauce with lamb sausages, Baked Chicken with Okra, a vegetarian stew called Gyuvech, Stuffed Baby Peppers, and then topped off for dessert with a round pumpkin strudel called Banitsa. Prijatno!”

Many thanks to the Brotherhood of Kol Ami for sharing this video montage of their “TXOKO Culinary Club” experience, exploring the Jewish Cuisine of the Balkans.
