Over the past year, your Florida Region FJMC webmaster has been taking a deep dive into the Metaverse of Men’s Club, viewing countless websites and Facebook pages to learn about close to one hundred different Conservative, Reform and Orthodox Jewish Men’s Clubs and Brotherhoods that populate the Sunshine State. This virtual journey through a wonderland of websites and a sea of social media has resulted in the conclusion that some Men’s clubs and Brotherhoods have an excellent web and social media presence; others haven’t updated their content in years. The rest are nearly invisible.
The effective use of your website and social media can help you to grow your Men’s Club or Brotherhood. It can be used to to increase awareness of and membership in your Men’s Club or Brotherhood from your existing Temple members. You can also use it to find new members, amplify your “message” and increase the reach of your fundraising campaigns through strategic reposting of your “brand” and “content” to your Temple’s social media as well as strategic partners like your local JCC or unrelated “local” Jewish themed Facebook Groups. You can also use social media like Facebook to create an event, build the buzz and increase advance registration or ticket sales for your events.
Social media also has a dark side. To paraphrase the 19th century German philosopher Frederick Nietzsche, ‘Sometimes when you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back‘. The successful amplification of your message on social media to an audience outside of your existing Temple membership could have unintended consequences, including bullying, copyright issues or possible legal liability through promoting a Casino night, a football pool or a raffle.
Your website and social media are tools; use them wisely.
