Yasher Koach to Mke 'Doc" Binder, recipient of 2024 Mike Korenvaes Man of the Year Award

The Kol Ami Brotherhood of Tampa, Florida recently honored long-time Brotherhood member Michael ‘Doc” Binder as recipient of the (5th Annual) 2024 Mike Korenvaes Man of the Year award.

“Five years ago, in keeping with the long-standing tradition observed by many member chapters of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs, our Brotherhood board decided to establish our own Man of the Year Award. I can’t think of a more fitting and wonderful way to recognize and express our appreciation for a Brotherhood member who has demonstrated extraordinary dedication, outstanding leadership, and unparalleled altruism and service to our kehillah and Brotherhood”, said Kol Ami Brotherhood President Jon Zimmer.

“The Man of the Year Award memorializes our beloved friend, Mike Korenvaes (z”l), who epitomized what it means to be a selfless volunteer, a great leader, and a true mensch. His legacy of service, dedication, and kindness will serve as a timeless example for all of us. So it is a great honor and privilege for me to present this very special award to Doc. He has contributed to Kol Ami as a selfless volunteer in many ways: helping as a security volunteer during services, assisting our Chai Guys & Gals with yardwork and other chores, manning the grill for Steaks in the Sukkah and the end of year picnic, leading Hearing Men’s Voices sessions, and much more. I’d like to offer a heartfelt todah rabah to everyone who helped make this momentous event possible, especially Mario Rodriguez, Mitch Weiss, and the entire Brotherhood board. I’d also like to pay homage to the previous Man of the Year award winners: Gary Teblum, Barry D’vorchik (z”l), Dan Ochman, and David Cross.”

Michael and Amy Binder, both originally from Brooklyn, NY, joined Congregation Kol Ami in 1992, shortly after relocating from a 5-year detour to Pennsylvania. Michael joined the Men’s Club (now called the Brotherhood) immediately. Both Michael and Amy have been active members of the shul and in the Jewish Community. Presently, Michael is a member of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), which he rejoined after retiring from University of Florida. For the JCRC, he chairs the Asian-American Outreach Committee. He is also a member of the board of Suncoast Hillels. For Kol Ami, Michael sits on the board of the Brotherhood, where he is chairman of the Membership Committee. He is also a member of Kol Ami’s Security and Professional Advisory Committees. Michael and Amy have 3 children, Mara, Aaron and Anna, 2 of whom are members at Kol Ami. They also have 2 grandchildren, Lucas and Liliane. Michael is a retired Urologist.
