Over 150 men from 48 different Men's Clubs and Brotherhoods participated in the FJMC Israel Walking Challenge

The FJMC 2024 Israel Walking Challenge began on Passover and was completed on Shavuot. During the virtual 7-week journey from Haifa to Jerusalem, participants visited a number of cities in Israel including Haifa, Hadera, Netanya, Tel Aviv, Yafo, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Sderot, and Jerusalem. The virtual journey covered a total of 327,000 steps.

We are very excited about this challenge and hope that it will encourage your Region and/or Club to offer other wellness programming during the coming year“, said FJMC International Past President and 2024/25 Health & Wellness Committee Chair Dr. Bob Braitman.

“Thanks to the support of the FJMC Foundation for Jewish Life, over 150 men from 48 clubs and 13 regions participated in the first Walking Challenge through Israel. This challenge was designed to put a focus on the pressing issue of Men’s Health and Well- Being, a fundamental priority for FJMC.

Overall, 49,851,78 steps were taken over the course of the challenge! Alan Lyss from B’nai Amoona Men’s Club of St. Louis (Midwest Region) came in as the leader in personal steps with 1,125,099 steps followed by David Cohen of Beth Sholom of Elkins Park, PA (Middle Atlantic Region) with 981,138 steps and followed closely by Mitch Lieberman from Beth El in South Orange, NJ (Northern NJ Region) with 978,838 steps.

Club teams atop the leaderboard included Beth Sholom, Elkins Park PA from the Middle Atlantic Region and Neveh Shalom, Portland OR from the Western Region. Here is a photo of the proud team from the Neveh Shalom Men’s Club of Portland.

These walks are designed to be a vehicle for camaraderie in our men’s clubs as well as a starting point for other health and wellness programming locally. Plans are underway for a walk in the fall. Stay tuned for information as it becomes available. For more information about the walking challenges or the FJMC Health Initiative send email to Wellness@FJMC.org.

The goals of the FJMC Wellness Initiative are to (1) increase awareness of health and wellness issues by our members, (2) encourage Men’s Clubs / Brotherhoods to adopt health and wellness programming as an integral part of their mission, (3) add visibility and vitality to club programming on a local level and (4) create another “portal of entry” for men otherwise not involved to play a more active role in their Men’s Club or Brotherhood. Transform your Men’s Club or Brotherhood into an FJMC Wellness Club and receive timely tips about meaningful and successful programs from around the continent. To register your Men’s Club or Brotherhood as an FJMC Wellness Club, email wellness@fjmc.org and we’ll get all of the details to you right away. Its fun and its free.
