Get Wrapped with the Temple Beth Am Men's Club of Margate Florida

The Temple Beth Am Men’s Club offers an opportunity to establish life-long friendships and offer a broad range of programming and activities including Trivia Night, Karaoke. Sporting Event Trips (Marlins, Panthers, Dolphins), Sunday Speaker Series and much more. The Men’s Club also helps support the Temple through various fundraising activities including running Monday night Bingo and seasonal raffles. Recent Beth Am Men’s Club activities include a four-hour fishing adventure aboard the 101 foot Starlight 101, a Super Bowl Squares contest and the FJMC World Wide Wrap. The Men’s Club Sunday Speaker Series speakers included breakfast with Major League Baseball legend Art Shamsky, member of the ‘Miracle Mets’ that won the 1969 World Championship.

In the “June-July-August 2024” issue of ‘The Scribe’, Temple Beth Am’s quarterly synagogue newsletter, Men’s Club President Larry Schwartz reflects on some highlights of his recent Men’s Club activities.

This past year was exciting and action-packed. Here’s a glimpse of our events and accomplishments over the past year and what’s in store for the next couple of months.

Men’s Club Bingo is up and running each Monday evening unless a holiday falls on that day. Our players love our games and all the volunteers that make it so enjoyable. If you have never played Bingo, give it a try. It’s so much fun, especially if you win the Power Ball for $1000!! As we have done over the past several years, we had our Annual Football Pool where you had a chance to win some serious scratch (money) each and every week of the football season. No knowledge of football is necessary to play. We also had our annual Back to Shul BBQ as well as a trip to see our Marlins for the Jewish Celebration Day baseball game. Other events we had throughout the year included a trivia night, karaoke, Super Bowl Squares contest, World Wide Wrap, a night at an Escape Room, and a Movie Night/Raffle showing A League of Their Own. Of course, who doesn’t remember our Men’s Club Concert? This year’s concert was Naturally Diamond, The Ultimate Neil Diamond Tribute. Everyone danced and sang to all the hits from Neil Diamond. It was a fantastic show and I promise that next year’s show will also be great. The Men’s Club has once again organized ushers for the High Holidays as well as every Shabbat morning. We truly appreciate all the volunteers who perform this important mitzvah.

Now on to the events planned for the upcoming months. Please be sure to play our Annual Football Pool where you can follow along to see how your teams did and have a chance to win a few shekels along the way as well as raise money for TBA. We need participation from everyone to make this FUNdraiser successful. Tickets will be available sometime in June. August 18th will be our very popular Back to Shul BBQ which will be part of the Temple Open House event. Please sign up well in advance so that we have enough hot dogs, hamburgers, side dishes and watermelon to fill everyone’s tummy. We will, once again, need volunteers to help slice and dice as well as serve food to everyone that attends. I truly appreciate all your help.

The following week, Sunday, August 25th will be the annual Marlins Jewish Community Celebration Game. This year’s opponents will be the Chicago Cubs. We will, once again, have a bus available at an additional cost to bring us to and from loanDepot Park. Sign up early as ticket sales will close August 11th with no guarantee that I will be able to get additional seats in our same section on the first base line.

If you have any ideas for an event, please let me know and we will see if we can make it happen. Well, that’s a look back over the last year and what we have planned over the next couple of months. I hope to see all of you soon and wish you all a healthy new Temple year. Thank you to everyone who participated in our events and volunteered their time and energy to make them successful.”

Looking ahead, on Sunday September 15 at 7pm, the Beth Am Men’s Club will sponsor a unique “Jews in Baseball” Zoom event / discussion on the entertaining and laugh-filled behind the scenes story of the iconic Jews in Baseball artwork. You’ll hear about the multi-year quest of a Jewish baseball fan who brought together every significant living major league Jewish baseball player to participate, autograph, and tell their inside stories. On Sunday morning November 3, 2024 the Temple Beth Am Men’s Club will be hosting a special LIVE & In-Person Men’s Club Breakfast meeting featuring Kindertransport survivor Walter Klein. Kindertransport children are child Holocaust survivors and an important part of Holocaust History. They were saved from the horrors of the death camps however they were uprooted from their families and friends, separated from their parents and transported to different countries and cultures where they faced a mixture of kindness, indifference, occasional exploitation and the selflessness of ordinary people faced with needy children. Read more about Walter Klein’s story at: http://www.judaica-badneustadt.de/bn/stories/stories/walterklein.html.
