- The Temple Beth Sholom Men’s Club wishes everyone a Happy Purim and looks forward to an exciting year of engaging programs and events.
The Temple Beth Sholom (TBS) Men’s Club of Sarasota, Florida is dedicated to involving men of all ages in Jewish life through social, educational, religious and civic activities. Each year, Men’s Club offers a full calendar of events, ranging from breakfasts with thought-provoking speakers and social action events to tzedakah for the congregation. Men’s Club also co-sponsors some events with TBS Sisterhood such as the Annual Passover Barbecue and maintaining the TBS Judaica Museum and the Holocaust Memorial Garden. Members of the Men’s Club participate in and contribute to the daily minyan and provide the Wednesday morning breakfast after the minyan; they are gabbais, helpers and ushers for shul services and advisors for how to put on Tefillin. Men’s Club also has an active outreach program; they interface, participate and contribute to all areas and groups on the Temple Beth Sholom campus, seeding new programs and encouraging intergenerational activities. All male temple members are welcome to join and help us fulfill our goal of service to the Temple.
The Temple Beth Sholom Men’s Club President Joel Servetz looks forward to an exciting year of engaging programs and events. Men’s Club started 2025 with a joint program co-sponsored an event with the Temple Beth Shalom Sisterhood, the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee and a series of Jewish and Christian agencies to bring Daniel Kurtzer (former US Ambassador to Israel and Egypt) to Sarasota and to speak on the topic “Israel and the Region After the War in Gaza: Inflection Point or More of the Same?” The war in Gaza unleashed a torrent of threats against Israel and has at least temporarily halted the normalization process between Israel and some Arab states. Without a clear plan for the “day after,” the region could sink further into chaotic violence, or it could emerge with a new resolve to solve some of its endemic problems. Ambassador Kurtzer discussed these issues within the context of regional politics and the U.S. domestic political debate.
On Superbowl Sunday, the Beth Shalom Men’s Club took part in the FJMC World Wide Wrap, an international, coordinated minyan encouraging Jewish men and women to learn about and participate in one of the basic commandments in the Torah: the wrapping of tefillin. The program included breakfast and a special speaker from the American Jewish Committee to discuss antisemitism.
During March, the TBS Men’s Club hosted a special breakfast program; “Moses, the Hollywood Star” featuring guest speaker JT Thaler.
As time marches forward, it is our task to remember and teach about the Shoah. Each year, the Temple Beth Sholom Men’s Club distributes FJMC Shoah Yellow Candles™ to the CBS family of families. On the night of Yom HaShoah, the candles are lit to shine a light of memory, a light of education, and a light that we will never forget. Participation in this program helps to keep the memory of the Shoah alive and to remember what could happen if we don’t stand up for ourselves. Yom HaShoah begins at sundown Wednesday April 23, 2025 / 27 Nisan 5785. Please join us in a moment of solidarity for our six million brothers and sisters that were lost in the Shoah.
