Florida Region FJMC Treasurer & Temple Beth El Men's Club Past President Moshe Adler (L) and Rabbi Alan Bell (R) of Temple Beth El WPB with the FJMC Sefer Haftarah Scroll

For the past two months, the FJMC Sefer Haftarah has sojourned within the Florida Region of FJMC, visiting Men’s Clubs and Brotherhoods across the State and being collectively viewed by over a thousand congregants spread across eight Men’s Clubs and Brotherhoods.

The FJMC Sefer Haftarah Scroll began its visit to the Sunshine State with an action filled week at Temple Torat Emet (Boynton Beach) where it was incorporated into weekly Shabbat Services, the annual FJMC World Wide Wrap program and Torat Emet’s the Youth education program. From there, the Sefer Haftarah Scroll traveled to the Congregation Kol Ami (Tampa), Temple Israel (Orlando), Temple Beth Shalom (Melbourne), Temple Beth Am (Margate), Congregation Ohev Shalom (Maitland), Congregation B’nai Torah (Ormond Beach) and Temple Beth El (West Palm Beach).

Temple Beth El reports, “Temple Beth El’s Men’s Club held its annual Men’s Club Shabbat on Friday and Saturday, March 28 and 29.  On Shabbat morning, Men’s Club members led the service and read Torah.  The Haftarah was read from the FJMC Sefer Haftarah by Stewart Kampel, after a brief history of the Sefer Haftarah was given by past Men’s Club president and past Temple president, Moshe Adler.  Stewart Kampel celebrated his bar mitzvah anniversary on February 15, reading the maftir aliyah and the haftarah.  Amazingly, Stewart still has the bar mitzvah booklet that was given to him when he was studying for his bar mitzvah many years ago.  He did a great job on his bar mitzvah anniversary and again last Shabbat for our Men’s Club Shabbat, reading from the FJMC Sefer Haftarah.  TBE Men’s Club is grateful to the FJMC for allowing us to us the Sefer Haftarah“.

A hearty Kol HaKavod to Stewart Kampel, Moshe Adler, Rabbi Alan Bell and the Temple Beth El Men’s Club for planning an epic Sefer Haftarah Men’s Club Shabbat.

The FJMC Sefer Haftarah Scroll contains a collection of every Haftarah read during the year, including those from holidays and Rosh Chodesh. The Haftarot are scripted by a sofer on a parchment scroll in the same manner as a Torah. In fact, when rolled up and covered by its mantle, the Haftarah scroll looks exactly like a Torah scroll but not as thick. But unlike a Torah, the Haftarah scroll contains vowels and the trop. In addition, there are dedications of the various Haftarot in English and Hebrew. Since it was first unveiled during the 2003 FJMC Biennial Convention in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, the FJMC Sefer Haftarah scroll has travelled around North America to Men’s Clubs and Brotherhoods, to regional retreats and to FJMC conventions., visiting synagogues from West Coast to East Coast, from Florida to Canada. At services, it is treated very much like a Torah. It is housed in the Ark, undressed and redressed like a Torah, and carried around the congregation in the Torah procession.
