- The Temple Beth Sholom Men’s Club wants to be the first to wish everyone “L’Shana Tova Tikatevu“; may you be inscribed in the Book of Life, just in time for another exciting year of engaging TBS Men’s Club programs and events.
The Temple Beth Sholom (TBS) Men’s Club of Sarasota, Florida is dedicated to involving men of all ages in Jewish life through social, educational, religious and civic activities. Each year, Men’s Club offers a full calendar of events, ranging from breakfasts with thought-provoking speakers and social action events to tzedakah for the congregation. Men’s Club also co-sponsors some events with TBS Sisterhood such as the Annual Passover Barbecue and maintaining the TBS Judaica Museum and the Holocaust Memorial Garden. Members of the Men’s Club participate in and contribute to the daily minyan and provide the Wednesday morning breakfast after the minyan; they are gabbais, helpers and ushers for shul services and advisors for how to put on Tefillin. Men’s Club also has an active outreach program; they interface, participate and contribute to all areas and groups on the Temple Beth Sholom campus, seeding new programs and encouraging intergenerational activities. All male temple members are welcome to join and help us fulfill our goal of service to the Temple.
Recent TBS Men’s Club programs and events of note included the 5785 FJMC World Wide Wrap and distribution of FJMC Shoah Yellow Candles™; this year’s Wrap included breakfast and a special speaker from the American Jewish Committee to discuss antisemitism. The TBS Men’s Club also hosted a special breakfast program; “Moses, the Hollywood Star” featuring guest speaker JT Thaler and co-sponsored a high profile event with the TBS Sisterhood, the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee and a series of Jewish and Christian agencies featuring guest speaker Daniel Kurtzer, former US Ambassador to Israel and Egypt, to speak on the topic “Israel and the Region After the War in Gaza: Inflection Point or More of the Same?”
In the June/July 2025 edition of Temple Beth Sholom’s monthly newsletter THE MESSENGER, TBS Men’s Club President Joel Servetz reported:
“It’s Summer and there isn’t much happening in Men’s Club. Our VP Programming, Rabbi Ed Weinsberg, is busy researching exciting new programs to bring to us for the Fall/Winter presentation season. If you have programming suggestions to share, please let me know. Meanwhile, what I’m thinking about most, at least in relation to the Men’s Club, is succession. This is my third two-year term as President and it’s time to pass the baton to new leadership. We need men of all age groups to step forward into leadership roles. I’m especially going to repeat my challenge to younger members of TBS. By that, I mean younger than the grandfathers who currently run the Men’s Club. We need you to step up and assume a leadership role in taking your Men’s Club into the future. If you don’t think the Men’s Club’s initiatives and programming choices represent the interests of all age groups, or that they aren’t relevant to the interests of your generation, you can change that, but only if you’re willing to make your voice heard by assuming a role in leadership. We have vacancies on the Men’s Club Board of Directors, and we need you to step forward to fill those vacancies. And we will need a new President! We need your ideas, your creativity, your energy, and your passion to make Men’s Club truly representative of the needs of all members of all ages. To quote Benjamin Franklin: “The world is run by the people who show up.” You can make a difference, but only if you’re willing to show up. Challenge made. Again! Who will accept? Contact Joel Servetz at videobyjoel@aol.com.”
Looking ahead, the TBS Men’s Club is planning a series of engaging, monthly Sunday morning Breakfast / Speaker programs, starting on Sunday morning October 26, 2025 at 9:30am when Rabbi Weinsberg & Joel Servetz will discuss “Original Sin; adaptation of Mark Twain’s Diaries of Adam & Eve”. Save the date for next two thought provoking (and delicious) Sunday morning Breakfast programs on November 9 at 9:30am on the topic “Ripped From the Headlines with Julie Friedman & Norman Olshansky” and on December 14 for “The History of the Israelites” featuring guest speaker Dr. Marnin Fischbach. The TBS Men’s Club plans to close out 2025 with a “Dinner and a Movie” event on Wednesday December 24; stay tuned for more information.
