- If I had a TARDIS and could travel anywhere in time and space, then where and when would I go? Where else but Sunny Florida to celebrate Chanukah 2002 and read the latest edition of the quarterly Florida Region FJMC newsletter, Tapuz.
The cover story in the Fall/Winter 2002 issue of Tapuz (Volume IX, No.1) read, “Convention 2003 To Be Held In Florida” at the Wyndham Bonaventure Resort in Weston, Florida from July 9 to 13, 2003. On page 11, future Florida Region FJMC President Ed Margolis filed the following report:
“Convention 2003 WOW!!! We are in the middle of the next Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs Convention at Wyndham Bonaventure Resort in Weston July 9 – 13, 2003; The FJMC is celebrating 75 years of Involving Jewish Men in Jewish Lives.
Best wishes to Stephen Markowitz – Florida Region’s “book-balancing” Treasurer – who is the Regional Coordinator responsible, with President Allan Gottesman, for extending to all Florida Men’s Club members the many benefits of attending this convention.
As local co-coordinator, with Bob Schacter, I enjoyed a whirlwind weekend with Tom Sudow and Mike Mills, convention coordinators and fifteen other women and men from around the world at the resort early last July. We are looking at a wonderful convention which will knock your socks off. This is the first time the FJMC is traveling outside the northeast, and coming to South Florida, the second largest area of Jewish Population in the country (behind New York City), we have a tremendously ambitious challenge before us.
The local leadership is coming together with a great line-up. Many of you have volunteered and have yet to be placed. (Don’t worry! There are lots of critical jobs left.) So far, in addition to the above and numerous volunteers from around the world, Florida Regional volunteers are:
* Randall “Smitty” Smith is Co-Operation Chairman (an International designation)
* Allan Gottesman is Co-Ritual Chairman
* Dr. Bob Mandel is Recreational Chairman
* Jeffrey Litt is Co-Daily Newspaper Chairman
* Debbie Margolis is Co-Women’s Programming Chairwoman
* Bill King is Transportation Chairman
* Alan Weisbaum is Golf Outing Chairman
* Milton Silber, Golf Outing Vice-Chairman
* Steve Sax is Local Printer
Many more leaders in Florida will receive additional vital responsibilities, from providing religious items for the minyans, to women’s shopping and tours & children’s programming, to welcoming graciously over 600 outsiders at local airports and in the Wyndham Resort’s cocktail reception lounge.
We hope this convention will outperform all past conventions. All Florida FJMC members will be called on to help make the delegates and guests feel welcome, display the hot “ruach” brewing in our region and help make the 75th year convention a tremendous and memorable success.
