Steve Cohn says its a good day to go fishing

Sunrise came early to the Florida Region of FJMC last Sunday morning as the men and women of Temple Torat Emet Men’s Club of Boynton Beach and Temple Beth Torah Brotherhood of Wellington, Florida set sail on a four hour fishing extravaganza of epic proportion.

The seas were calm as we set sail aboard the 72 foot, all aluminum, Sea Mist III from Boynton Beach Marina. The Garnsey family has been involved in South Florida drift fishing trips since the mid-1940s and they gave our group a wonderful day of drift fishing in first class comfort with a professional crew on an outstanding fishing boat. Our all inclusive experience came with fishing rods and reels, tackle and expert deck hands that baited our hooks with six inch sardines and untangled our mono filament lines with the greatest of ease.

Steven Cohn, Dave Yellin and Jake Kohenak like to go fishing, how about you?

You could feel the electricity in the air as we slowly slid across the tranquil waters of a perfectly warm July morning as our vessel cruised north along the intracoastal waterway. Dozens of early morning fishermen bid us adieu as we turned east and set forth from the gates of Boynton Inlet into the open ocean.

Our ship followed a nautical pathway that gently paralleled the southern Atlantic coastline, altering course to avoid offshore storms as we sailed past the glistening greens of the Gulf Stream Golf Club and the majestic silhouette of the seventy year old, 168 foot high, Delray Beach Water Tower. As we approached the shoals off Highland Beach and the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, our captain cut the engines and the excitement began.

We dropped our lines to a depth of 200 feet, probing the briny deep for sweet snapper, kick mackerel, blue porgy, wild wahoo and giant grouper. The underwater inhabitants of our coastal habitat were sly and hungry; snapping our bait into sushi as they strategically nibbled our hooks and and tugged on our lines.

This is a Fish, any questions?

For the next three hours we, the humans, did battle with the creatures of the deep, and in the end the bipeds were victorious, triumphantly returning to Boynton Beach Marina unharmed, which is more than we can say for the fish that were caught that day.

The event was a successful example of what happens when Florida Region FJMC Men’s Clubs and Brotherhoods get together, do stuff and have fun.
